From Costumes to Chords: How Scary Pop III Celebrated Halloween Through Sound
December 5, 2025 | Mia Kennedy
Draped in everything from movie character getups to horror-inspired scares, the crowd that gathered at SigPi for Cherry Pop’s third annual Scary Pop was as vibrant as the performances themselves. Sponsored by Red Bull, this themed music concert celebrated Halloween through three sonically diverse yet equally talented musical performances.

Taking the stage first was Dryhouse, an indie band whose mix of original and cover songs stole the crowd from the get-go. With covers of popular songs like “Pool House,” the soft guitar strums created a nostalgic ambience for everyone as the night began. The standout of their set was their take on Coldplay’s “Yellow,” with second-year UCLA student Korina Mayorga recalling, “My favorite song was their cover of ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay, it was absolutely monumental. It felt like I was very connected with my friend group.” And with lead singer Amir releasing his new album, “Memos,” that same night, their performance gave a taste of what this band has to offer.

Following them was Lily Sturges, one of Cherry Pop’s newest signees. Wearing an angel costume and perched behind a DJ soundboard, she effortlessly blended house pop and alternative R&B through a set list that left the audience wanting more. Tracks like “Mystic Bitch” and “One More” invited the crowd into her world and left them feeling more connected than ever with Sturges. Her standout set gave a taste of her future with Cherry Pop, and though she may be a newcomer to the label, she proved that she’s here to stay.

Then came the night’s final act, Lady Vengeance, who made their striking return with a bang. Reemerging in full force, the band performed their self-titled EP, “Lady Vengeance,” as the final act of the night. The combination of electrifying guitars and roaring drums brought both a chaotic and unifying energy. Their performance of the fan-favorite “Clone Wars” brought a defiant spirit to the crowd, and “Punching Bag” perfectly blended emotionally raw lyrics with a rhythmic punk beat for everyone to remember.

Throughout the night, Redbull kept the energy flowing with free drinks, giving the audience an extra jolt to dance, scream, and revel in every moment. The venue itself was transformed into a haunted pop haven. Streamers cascaded from the ceiling, lights flashed in time with the music, and the classic black-and-orange Halloween palette bathed the space in eerie, festive vibes—perfect for celebrating the ghoulish holiday.

The atmosphere, music, and talent present at Scary Pop III blended into an unforgettable night. Every performance brought its own energy, and together, they created a perfectly curated night that balanced softness with noise, angelic with chaotic, fun with ferociousness. Everywhere you looked, there was a new detail to absorb, a new way the scene pulled you in deeper, and gave you a reason to stay. Fourth-year UCLA student Eden captured it best: “Scary Pop is fun because everyone is in costumes and dressing up for Halloween, but the music is another layer.” It was the perfect send-off to spooky season—and the ideal introduction to the UCLA music talent here on campus.
